IHSAA releases sports classes for 2017-18, 2018-19

The IHSAA released the sports classifications for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 sports seasons, with numerous changes to area schools.

In football, Snider moves up to Class 6A because of the tournament success factor, with state and regional titles the last two years. Eastside, South Adams and Churubusco will move from 2A to 1A.

Boys and girls soccer will now have three classifications, with Carroll, Homestead, Warsaw, East Noble, Northrop, Snider, North Side, Huntington North, South Side and Wayne in the top class in both genders.

DeKalb and Bishop Dwenger boys are in Class 3A as well, but the girls teams for those schools are not. Canterbury boys are back down to Class A after playing a class up the last few years.

In volleyball, Concordia will remain in Class 4A because of the tournament success factor, with sectional and regional titles in the higher class the last two years. Blackhawk Christian will move up to 2A after a state title this year, while Fremont moves down to 1A because of enrollment.

In boys basketball, Bishop Dwenger and Columbia City move from 3A to 4A, Woodlan moves from 2A to 3A and Fremont from 2A to 1A.

In girls basketball, South Bend St. Joseph, North Harrison and Heritage Christian are moving up from 3A to 4A, meaning Bishop Dwenger and Columbia City girls teams will remain in 3A. Woodlan moves from 2A to 3A and Fremont moves down from 2A to 1A.

Baseball and softball classifications will be released in the coming days, according to the IHSAA news release.
