The Komets have recognized that their offense, which has produced six goals in the last three games, is lagging. So the team has signed forward Justin Chwedoruk, who will be in the lineup Friday against the Muskegon Lumberjacks, pending approval from the IHL.Chwedoruk should be familiar to Fort Wayne fans -- he had 24 goals and 68 points in 2006-07
Posted at 11:35 pm November 19, 2009 | MoreThe IHL has suspended Dayton Gems defenseman Greg Labenski five games for elbowing the Komets' Konstantin Shafranov during a 2-1 Fort Wayne victory on Saturday night. Shafranov, who has a concussion, missed Sunday's 2-1 loss at Muskegon, Mich., and has been placed on 30-day injured reserve.

Posted at 7:20 pm November 16, 2009 | MoreMUSKEGON, Mich. -- The Komets coaching staff stressed to the players that they should avoid getting involved in any fracases with the Muskegon Lumberjacks. With so many injuries, the Komets could ill afford to let the circus come to town.
Posted at 9:22 pm November 15, 2009 | MoreMUSKEGON, Mich. -- The Komets continue to struggled to find some offense, and they're going to struggle to win this game.Todd Robinson just scored during a 5-on-3 power play late in the second period, and the Muskegon Lumberjacks lead the Komets 2-0.It was just a matter of time before the Komets' lack of offensive production caught up with them. This could be the day. The Komets are playing very well defensively, though.
Posted at 6:38 pm November 15, 2009 | MoreMUSKEGON, Mich. -- The Komets trail the Muskegon Lumberjacks 1-0 after one period at L.C. Walker Arena.John DiPace scored on the Lumberjacks' first shot, 42 seconds into the game, after Robin Bouchard set him up in front of the net. DiPace kind of whiffed on the shot, but it was enough to beat Tim Haun, who was way out of the net.
Posted at 5:51 pm November 15, 2009 | MoreEither general manager David Franke and radio broadcaster Bob Chase were misinformed, or strange things are afoot.Travis Whitehead is on the ice during warm-ups, even though Franke and Chase said he had a knee injury. So either the Komets don't want the Lumberjacks to know they'll be short, or he's just going to sit on the bench and serve penalties if need be.
Posted at 4:35 pm November 15, 2009 | MoreMUSKEGON, Mich. -- Here's a bit of a surprise: Playoff MVP David Hukalo has been activated and will play his first game of the season, after recovering from offseason shoulder surgery that was supposed to keep him out of the Komet's lineup until later this month. He is in the lineup for Konstantin Shafranov, who suffered a concussion when he was elbowed by Greg Labenski in a 2-1 victory over Dayton on Saturday night.

Posted at 3:44 pm November 15, 2009 | MoreLet us first discuss the power play that the Komets got in overtime Saturday night.Dayton's Matt Auffrey and Fort Wayne goaltender Tim Haun were chasing the puck and Auffrey came down tomahawk style with his stick on Haun's pads. I have no problem with referee Seth Ferguson calling the penalty there.
Posted at 11:26 pm November 14, 2009 | MoreThe Komets are playing without defenseman Danko Mironovic, who is battling a virus. He is unlikely to play Sunday at Muskegon, Mich., too.The Komets remain up on the Dayton Gems, 1-0 after two periods at Memorial Coliseum.
Posted at 11:26 pm November 14, 2009 | MoreExciting hockey at Memorial Coliseum so far tonight, and a big reason is the speed of the Dayton Gems.I think it caught the Komets off guard at first -- they haven't played Dayton since opening night -- but Fort Wayne has the lead thanks to a Matt Woodard shot from about 45 feet out.Compared to Friday night's snoozer, a 2-1 victory over Quad City, this game has been fun.
Posted at 8:09 pm November 14, 2009 | MoreFirst off, here's what really happened with Nick Boucher: The Komets goaltender suffered a broken pinky finger on his left hand during practice Thursday, on the heels of him hyper-extending the thumb on his right hand the week before. This is bascially about pain management. The Komets will evaluate Boucher on Tuesday.
Posted at 11:43 pm November 13, 2009 | MoreFor the record, I like the Quad City Mallards' lime green uniforms, even if seemingly everyone else in the building tonight is calling them, The Ugliest Things Ever Worn in Pro Sports. That's a discussion for another time.
Posted at 9:56 pm November 13, 2009 | MoreMembers of the Notre Dame hockey team, along with former Komets player and current Irish Associate Coach Paul Pooley, will teach a free youth hockey clinic at Memorial Coliseum on Nov. 21 at noon. The Fighting Irish will be in town for their game against the Michigan State Spartans on Nov. 22 at 4:00 p.m. All participants in the clinic will receive a voucher for a free ticket to the game. He had been battling a thumb injury on his right hand earlier in the week.Boucher won't play in any of the three games this weekend. Because Tyler Sims was signed as an emergency goaltender, he can only play if Tim Haun suffers an injury.
