Jermarkis Willis almost single-handedly made sure Class 4A No. 2 Bishop Dwenger staved off an upset against host Northrop, 22-14, on Friday.
Willis rushed for 270 yards and two touchdowns and intercepted Dan Beers’ pass to silence Northrop’s comeback in the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Willis helped the Saints chew the clock by carrying 13 times. He had 32 rushes in the game.
But his play on defense was just as big.
Dwenger was forced to punt late, giving Northrop the ball back at its 20-yard line with 4:19 remaining. On second-and-16, Willis grabbed the interception.
HOMESTEAD 44, COLUMBIA CITY 0: Charles Seals got only 10 carries for the Spartans at home. All he did was produce 180 yards and three touchdowns.
Seals’ 47-yard TD run opened the scoring after a scoreless first quarter. Less than seven minutes later, he scored on a 69-yard run. With only 33 seconds to play in the half, he snagged a pass from Logan Laughlin for a 32-yard touchdown. He added a touchdown run in the third quarter.
CONCORDIA 42, SOUTH SIDE 7: Jake Owens threw four touchdown passes in the Cadets’ home rout.
Zawadi Holliday, who was Concordia’s top rusher with 86 yards, caught two touchdown passes. Owens completed 9 of 21 throws for 125 yards.
Brandon Knox led the Cadets defense with three sacks.
NORTH SIDE 28, WAYNE 22: Ty Tubbs and Taylor Howenstine combined to rush for 239 yards and three touchdowns for the visiting Redskins.
Wayne led 22-20 heading into the fourth quarter, but Tubbs’ 3-yard touchdown and Howenstine’s conversion run gave North Side the lead.
Howenstine carried 13 times for 133 yards, and Tubbs had 106 yards on 10 carries.
Wayne’s Ray Byers had 127 yards rushing and a touchdown.
SNIDER 70, ELMHURST 14: Brent Bostic rushed for 172 yards and four touchdowns, two in each half, as the Panthers routed the host Trojans.
Six other players had touchdowns for Snider, which was tied at 14 early in the second quarter.
Elmhurst’s DeMikel Tinker completed 28 of 50 passes for 259 yards and a touchdown, but he also threw three interceptions.
CARROLL 26, NEW HAVEN 7: The Chargers held the Bulldogs to only 162 yards, and Tyler Cady kicked four field goals at home.
Shane Gressley scored New Haven’s only touchdown on a 1-yard run in the third quarter.
DEKALB 34, EAST NOBLE 28: Barons quarterback Brandon Koch connected with Corbin Smith on a 5-yard TD pass in overtime to lift DeKalb to a home victory.
