In a showdown of conference unbeatens, Angola defeated Fairfield 4-1 in a key NECC tennis match Monday.
The Hornets (10-1) pushed their league record to 5-0, while the Falcons (10-2) came in with a 5-0 conference mark.
Although Angola won four of the five individual points, the final score wasn’t indicative of the competition. Ben Hoffman won the No. 3 singles point with a narrow 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over Lance Hall, while the No. 2 doubles team also won in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 over Jason Skibbe and Wyatt Stutzman.
Additionally, Nick Burlingame won at No. 1 singles for the Hornets 6-4, 7-6 (5). The match’s most lopsided score was the 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles by Fairfield’s Spencer Crilow and Lucas Shrock.
DEKALB 3, CONCORDIA 2:Nick Martin and Austin Stokes at singles and the No. 1 doubles tandem of Jonathan Haggarty and Nick Kelley led the host Barons (6-3).
BISHOP DWENGER 3, NEW HAVEN 2:The Saints pushed their record to 7-1 win a slim win over the visiting Bulldogs. Carson Braun and Nathan Maskal won the top two singles, respectively, while Austen Rang and Danny Schenkel won at No. 1 doubles.
HUNTINGTON NORTH 5, SOUTH ADAMS 0:The Vikings had all straight-set victories on the road en route to their first win of the season after seven straight losses.
WHITKO 4, CENTRAL NOBLE 1:No. 1 singles player Dan Aldea outlasted Trevor Pulver in two tie-break sets to help the visiting Wildcats. Aldea won both sets 7-6, taking tiebreakers by 7-4 and 8-6 margins.
LAKELAND 7, HOWE MILITARY 0:Isaac Troyer scored six goals, including four in the second half, in the Lakers’ road win. Josh Avery had three assists.
SOUTH ADAMS 7, HERITAGE 2:Two goals each from Adam McLaughlin, Travis Lavy and Zack Sharp led the visiting Starfires.
WEST NOBLE 8, PRAIRIE HEIGHTS 0:Rafael Correa had two goals, and Jose Gallegos had two assists to lead West Noble (8-2) to its fifth NECC win without a loss.
HOMESTEAD 2, DEKALB 1:Wyatt Sorg and Tom Gallmeyer scored in the second half in the visiting Spartans’ NHC win.
COLUMBIA CITY 4, NEW HAVEN 0:Emily Saillant’s two goals and others by Cassy Nordman and Stephanie Kyler led the visiting Eagles.
NORWELL 3, EAST NOBLE 0:Ali Macias, Melissa Werling and Kylie Dial scored for the host Knights.
SOUTH ADAMS 8, HERITAGE 0:Three goals from Kinsey Lengerich and two each from Ashton Morgan and Maddie Moore led the host Starfires.
HERITAGE 3, WAYNE 0:Six kills and 10 assists from Alexa Kiess led the visiting Patriots over the Generals, 25-17, 25-16, 29-27.
SNIDER 3, HOMESTEAD 0:The host Panthers rolled to a 25-9, 25-9, 25-21 home win behind Anna Dick’s four kills and four aces.
