Indiana defensive linemen Jammie Kirlew and Greg Middleton combined to sack Jake Christensen on the second play of Saturday’s game.
It was the beginning of a very long day for Iowa’s quarterback.
The Hoosiers collected nine sacks in a 38-20 victory against the Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium. IU won in Iowa City for the first time since 1999 thanks in part to the strong defensive effort. Kirlew, a sophomore defensive end, had a career-high 3 1/2 sacks.
Middleton, a sophomore defensive end in his first season as a starter, added 2 1/2 .
Junior defensive end Ryan Marando, sophomore lineman Keith Burrus and senior cornerback Tracy Porter also had sacks.
The nine sacks are the most since a nine-sack performance Oct. 10, 1992, against Northwestern.
The Hoosiers have won five of the last eight meetings against Iowa. … Junior wide receiver James Hardy had at least 100 receiving yards for the 10th time in his career. That ties the school record set by Ernie Jones from 1984-87. … Indiana has forced 18 turnovers in its last 19 games.
