IPFW’s men’s volleyball team is ranked sixth in the preseason poll released by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
The Mastodons are coming off a 23-8 season that saw them reach the NCAA championship game.
Among those returning to the Mastodons’ lineup are All-American outside hitter C.J. Macias, middle hitter Josh Stewart and outside hitter Brock Ullrich.
BYU is ranked first in the poll, and the Cougars will play at Mastodons at the Gates Center on Jan. 18.
Pepperdine is ranked second, UCLA third, Penn State fourth and UC-Irvine, the defending national champion, is fifth.
IPFW opens its season Jan. 11 at eighth-ranked Ohio State.
Tommy Byrne, who fulfilled a boyhood dream by pitching for the New York Yankees and won a game during the 1955 World Series, has died. He was 87. Byrne’s rookie year was 1943 with the Yankees. He eventually was traded to the St. Louis Browns and also pitched for the Chicago White Sox and the Washington Senators. He returned to the Yankees in 1955, when he pitched a complete-game victory in Game 2 of the World Series, but he was the loser in Game 7 to the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Stephon Marbury has filed a grievance with the players association over the fine the New York Knicks gave him for missing a game in Phoenix last month. Marbury believes he was given permission to miss the game.
Miami linebacker Channing Crowder will miss the rest of the season because of an injured right knee. … The Jets placed wide receiver Laveranues Coles on injured reserve because of an ankle injury that has bothered him for weeks. … Linebacker Shawne Merriman will likely start Monday night when San Diego plays host to Denver.
The ATP suspended Italians Potito Starace and Daniele Bracciali for making bets – some as little as $7 – on matches involving other players. Starace, ranked 31st, was suspended for six weeks and fined $30,000, the Italian federation said. Bracciali, ranked 258th, was banned for three months and fined $20,000. Both suspensions take effect Jan. 1.
