Class 2A

Northeast Indiana has a monopoly these days on the top 2A rankings. The top three teams in the poll are from this part of the state with No. 1 Bluffton, No. 2 Westview and No. 3 Bishop Luers.

But only one can survive the northern postseason to get to state.

It gets started at the Woodlan Sectional, where the Tigers and Knights could face off in the championship game. Imagine that, one of the top three teams in the state eliminated the first Saturday of the tournament. It should be a classic matchup of balanced Bluffton against athletic Luers, led by sophomore sensation DeShaun Thomas and his 29 points and 13 rebounds a game.

“We have played everybody else in the sectional, besides Luers,” Bluffton coach Wayne Barker said of regular-season preparations. “(Beating Luers) is going to take a huge task for us.

“We try to get ourselves better regardless of who we think is the best team in the sectional. The past few years it has been Harding and before that it was Garrett.”

Over at the Westview Sectional, the host Warriors will have to wiggle past No. 10 Jimtown in the sectional finals. The two teams have already met once this season, with Westview winning by 10.

So the Bluffton/Luers winner would head to the Tipton Regional, while Westview would be at North Judson. The survivor of Bluffton and Luers could see No. 6 Tipton or No. 7 Oak Hill in the regional, while Westview’s regional experience would be void of ranked teams.

The semistate is where the top 2A in northern Indiana would be settled and bragging rights for this area would be determined among Bluffton, Westview and Bishop Luers.
