Bluffton to face Luers for crown

The Garrett boys basketball sectional was postponed Friday. The tournament will resume today with Garrett playing Eastside at 6 p.m. followed by Prairie Heights taking on Churubusco. The championship game will be 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Bluffton raced out to as much as a 22-point lead after the third quarter then coasted in for a 64-52 victory over South Adams on Friday in the semifinal of the Class 2A sectional at Woodlan.

The 22-0 Tigers, ranked No. 1 in the class, will play No. 3 Bishop Luers (19-3) today for the championship.

Cody Cochran scored 29 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the floor, including 6 of 7 from the three-point line, to pace Bluffton. Daniel Bollenbacher’s 13 led the Starfires (10-12).

In the opener at Woodlan, Luers won even though the area’s leading scorer, DeShaun Thomas, was held to nearly a third of his 29.8 points average. Thomas had 10 points for the Knights, who had four players in double figures, topped by 17 points each from Evan Blackmon and Lawrence Bennett. Josh Gorrell had 19 points for Woodlan (7-14).

Class 4A

EAST NOBLE 66, NORTHROP 64: The Knights shot 15 of 18 from the floor in the second half for an .833 percentage and finished at .667 (26 of 39) in their victory over the Bruins at DeKalb. Kevin Bloom and Kelby Probst each scored 18 points for the Knights (9-12). Trent Wilson had 20 for Northrop (10-12).

Class 3A

HERITAGE 55, CONCORDIA 53: Corey Snider scored 17 points to lead the Patriots at Harding.

Class A

CANTERBURY 67, LAKEWOOD PARK 57: Nick Lewis hit 12 of 14 free throws to finish with 21 points in the Cavaliers’ victory at the Hamilton Sectional.

BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN 56, BETHANY CHRISTIAN 51: Dayton Merrell’s 18 points led four players in double figures in the Braves’ semifinal win at Hamilton. The championship game against Canterbury will be played Monday at 7:30 p.m. because of Canterbury’s girls playing in the state finals today.
