Less than 48 hours after leading the Mad Ants to their second straight NBA D-League win, 7-foot-1 center Cheikh Samb was recalled by the Detroit Pistons.
Samb, who scored 16 points, had 10 rebounds and five blocked shots in a 114-96 victory over Iowa on Tuesday.
“I felt like he was a big loss for us,” Ants coach Jaren Jackson said. “He was developing at a nice pace, even though he had his moments when he struggled inside, but he was trying to play strong. I was excited about the way we he left as far as his play in his last two games. I hope things work out for him in Detroit.”
Samb played 19 games with Fort Wayne, averaging 10.9 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.95 blocks. He is expected to remain with Detroit for the rest of the NBA season.
The Ants acquired 6-foot-6 guard Dahntay Jones, who played three-plus years with the Memphis Grizzlies and was recently released by the Sacramento Kings.
Jones, a first-round draft pick of the Boston Celtics in 2003, saw limited action in 25 games with the Kings, averaging 3.2 points and 8.11 minutes.
“This kid is itching and ready to play,” Jackson said. “He’s been trying to figure out if the D-League was right for him. He’s in transition as far as getting back to the NBA and wanting to showing the NBA that he’s still an important, integral part of a playoff team.”
