ESPN Names Top 10 Of BCS Era

The Journal Gazette
ESPN Moment No. 8 -- Pat Dillingham

ESPN.com has launched an ambitious series about the BCS at 10 years old -- and part of it has a bunch of yop 10's during the BCS era, including the top 10 Independents and non-BCS moments, players, etc...

The main lead-in to the story is about Notre Dame and quotes athletic director Kevin White talking about how the arrangement has affected Notre Dame.

"We certainly have had our fair share of access, despite the fact that we have not had a great competitive run," Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White said. "It's fair to say the structure has been most accommodating to the needs and interests of Notre Dame.

"It's exactly what we signed up for. No surprises."

Among Notre Dame's rankings in the top-10 lists by ESPN.com writer Adam Rittenberg:

  • Former quarterback Brady Quinn No. 6 on the top-10 players list. Former TCU running back LaDanian Tomlinson is No. 1 and former Utah quarterback Alex Smith is No. 2.
  • The Notre Dame-USC game from 2005 is the No. 2 game and Navy-Notre Dame from 2007 is No. 4. The Oklahoma-Boise State Fiesta Bowl is No. 1.
  • Of the top-10 teams, the 2005 Notre Dame team is ranked No. 10, the only Irish squad on the list. Topping the list is 2006 Boise State, followed by 2004 Utah, 1998 Tulane and 2004 Louisville.
  • And the Irish dominated the top-10 moments. The Bush Push at the end of the USC-ND game in 2005 is No. 2, Notre Dame's firing of Tyrone Willingham is No. 4, George O'Leary's hiring-firing-rebounding at UCF is No. 7 and Pat Dillingham rallying Notre Dame to a win over Michigan State in 2002 (video on the right up top) is No. 8. No. 1, not surprisingly, is Ian Johnson's two-point conversion on the Statue of Liberty play to win the Fiesta Bowl followed by a proposal to his then-girlfriend, now-wife Chrissy Popadics on live television.

The Journal Gazette's Assistant Sports Editor Tony Krausz covers The University of Notre Dame. Krausz, a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a native of St. Louis, has been assistant sports editor since October 2005. Prior to joining the JG, he worked at two papers in Mississippi covering high school and college athletics.
