Dayne Crist Doesn't Like His Name Mispronounced

By Michael Rothstein
The Journal Gazette
Some Crist Highlights

Dayne Crist squirmed, the only time during the entire conversation when the laid-back quarterback from California needed to measure his words.

Crist, who at the time was a couple months away from officially being enrolled at Notre Dame, explained the reason. He understands the connection between his last name and the school he's attending. So he knows some comparisons will be made, even if the pronunciation of his last name isn't close.

Dayne Crist's last name is said "Kuh-rist," like crisp.

Not like Christ.

"People mess around with that," Crist said. "I'm the first one to end that conversation before it starts. I hate that kind of stuff but it's kind of inevitable. People, on accident, mispronounce my name and will say 'Christ' or something like that.

"I would never in a million years make that sort of comparison. But I'm the first one to end that conversation as soon as it begins. I'm not getting caught up in that conversation, that's for sure."

Still, substitute teachers and the first day of classes from when he was a child on up always led to some sort of phonetic gaffe.

And his response, like he's done time and time again, turns the usually affable kid into a robotic monotone.

"I'm a pretty religious person, too," Crist said. "So I hate when that gets brought up but at the same time I understand people feel like they need to have a little comedic relief with that."

It's already carried over to the social networking site Facebook, which Crist had not been a member of as of May. It hasn't stopped others, though, from having fun with his name. Among the groups created in Crist's honor: "Dayne Crist: Savior of Notre Dame Football,"  "Dayne Crist for Notre Dame QB 2008," and "Dayne Crist, The Next Brady Quinn."

As far as the last group, we talked with Crist about wearing Quinn's jersey in our story Saturday. Crist, though, was the one to initially tell us about the Facebook groups, as he heard from Braxston Cave and the Mike Golic Jr.

"This is too much man," Crist said about the Facebook adulation. "Again, that's not my style at all.

"At all."

We'll be back Tuesday with more stuff from our conversations with Crist, Anthony McDonald and John Goodman that didn't make the stories.
