The National Pork Producers Council has asked the Environmental Protection Agency to cut in half the federally mandated corn-based ethanol production for this fiscal year. The council says it needs this because of the higher prices of the cost of feed due to the recent flooding in much of the heartland and delayed plantings because of the wet spring.
I have another solution based on these facts:
1) Sixty-six percent of the grain raised in the U.S. goes to feed animals in concentrated animal feeding operations, leaving 34 percent for human consumption, ethanol, exports and the grain reserve.
2) The demand for meat is increasing.
3) The USDA recommends that we consume no more that 5 ounces of meat per day, but its own statistics show that Americans are consuming twice that much.
Therefore, if people would cut their meat consumption in half, only 33 percent of the grain would be needed for animals in CAFOs, and that would leave 67 percent for humans, ethanol, export and the grain reserve.

Why didn’t Allen County schools support the Lincoln Museum by encouraging field trips to this facility? According to The Journal Gazette article, “Last day for Lincoln Museum” (June 30), I could find no local school districts in the list of organizations that support the Lincoln Museum by supplying the No. 1 need of attendance. Are there not enough questions on the ISTEP+ to justify field trips to the Lincoln Museum? Support does not just involve money. Does history matter for the students in Indiana anymore?

Why do County Council members who voted for the Maplecrest Road fiasco believe this road project (Maplecrest to 930 East in New Haven) is so important? The road begins at Interstate 469 and ends at Lake Avenue. There is nothing at either end so important that one would want to travel the entire length to get to or from anyplace.
The County Council seems to be trying to shove this project down the throats of Fort Wayne citizens who will ultimately pay for the majority of the project. Fort Wayne citizens are tired of being told they will pay for this project or that project, having taxes raised, etc. This is another Harrison Square project, one that was done behind closed doors, decisions made, etc., without the knowledge or consent of those actually paying for the project.
Combined government is way past due – this project being forced upon the City Council by the County Council is a perfect example of what happens when one force is out to get the other. Don’t do a project and then wonder where the funding will come from.
