It took less than two seasons, but Jeff Samardzija is going to be a Chicago Cub.
The Chicago Tribune is reporting Samardzija will be officially called up Friday and will make his major-league debut this weekend with Chicago when the Cubs play Florida on Friday at 2:20 p.m. Eastern. If you're looking for tickets to see the former Notre Dame All-American wide receiver and pitcher, your best bet might be the kind scalpers outside of Wrigley Field or on StubHub, where tickets were available for $65 as of midnight Friday. Saturday had $58 tickets and Sunday $60.
It's unknown how long Samardzija will be with the club, as he's the beneficiary of Kerry Wood's annual trip to the disabled list. Wood, though, is not expected to be there long. Should Samardzija stick with the big club past the weekend, he'll travel to Milwaukee for a four-game series against the Brewers. According to the Tribune story, Wood can come off the DL on Tuesday.
Samardzija was 7-6 with a 4.29 ERA in 22 appearances between Class AA Tennessee and Class AAA Iowa this year. At Iowa, he was 4-1 with a 3.13 ERA in six starts, including a complete game.
If anyone out there in Insightsland ends up going to the game and would be willing to file a report for us since we'll be at Indianapolis Motor Speedway covering the Brickyard 400 all weekend, we'd appreciate it. E-mail me at mrothstein@jg.net if you're going.
