Your Mid Morning Break: Catching You Up On Notre Dame's World

By Michael Rothstein
The Journal Gazette

A bit of a late start this morning, but the big news of the day is obviously the death of former defensive line coach Joe Yonto last night. And, in a more uplifting vein, Notre Dame's men's basketball team starts up practice for its Ireland trip today. Insights will be there later today to cover it.

On to some other things going on in Notre Dame's world this morning -- as it's less than a week before media day and the startup of football season.

  • Former tight end John Carlson has Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren in his ear -- and that's a good thing, writes Dave Boling of the Tacoma News Tribune.

  • From the "Can't Say I'm Shocked" category: A guy named "Irish Jay" does tattoos of team logos at a parlor on Long Island. Guess what Irish Jay has on his body -- yep, a Notre Dame leprechaun.
  • The Los Angeles Times' Chris Dufresne has the Irish as the No. 25 team in his preseason poll.
  • Former Notre Dame swimmer Brian Casey is the new President at DePauw University.

  • And finally this little note since we mentioned baton twirling at Notre Dame in June. Chelsea Russell, who is the twirler for the University of Iowa, qualified for the World Baton Twirling Championships because of her performance at the nationals at the Joyce Center. You know, in case you were wondering.
Remember, Notre Dame practice starts Friday -- which means the return of the Mailbag among other features, and some new ones, too. E-mail your questions for the Bag to mrothstein@jg.net.

The Journal Gazette's Assistant Sports Editor Tony Krausz covers The University of Notre Dame. Krausz, a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a native of St. Louis, has been assistant sports editor since October 2005. Prior to joining the JG, he worked at two papers in Mississippi covering high school and college athletics.
