Images of the periodic table of elements, DNA and other symbols of forensic science graced poster boards at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne on Thursday.

They represented everything the students in IPFW’s Summer Youth Program: Life After High School have done for the past five weeks. This year, the camp was titled “CSI: IPFW” and focused on teaching students about forensic science.

Students also prepared for the ISTEP+ test in the fall and the SATs.

The high school students traveled to the state crime lab and visited the forensic science department at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Guest speakers knowledgeable on the subject visited IPFW, and the students learned about DNA and fingerprints.

“I just joined because of the career they were highlighting,” said Olivia Krueckeberg, who will be a senior at Bellmont High School this month. “So far, it really is fun.”

Amber Barron, an incoming junior at Northrop High School, attended the camp last year when it focused on a different subject, but this year’s theme fit her better.

“It’s something I’m really interested in,” Barron said.

One thing the students learned is that the “CSI” TV shows on CBS are not exactly like reality.

“There’s a lot of things that are bluffed,” Barron said.
