All Meadowbrook Elementary School students will be eligible to receive a free breakfast this school year.
In the past, only students whose family’s income fell below the income standards set by the federal government received a free breakfast. But the New Haven school is feeding so many students in the morning that there wasn’t enough time for the students to move through the line to pay their way, said Carol Smith, East Allen County Schools food services manager.
So to expedite the day’s most important meal, EACS decided to allow all students to eat breakfast for free.
“We need to feed kids in a shorter amount of time,” Smith said.
The accommodation, which will be good for at least this school year, comes after the district raised its lunch prices by 5 cents at elementary schools and 10 cents at the secondary schools to make up for increased food bids. Breakfast prices remain the same, and the district will not be reimbursed for the free service, Smith said.
“Hopefully, we’ll be just keeping our head above water for breakfast,” Smith said.
Meadowbrook students must still apply to receive a free or reduced lunch, which is determined by their family’s income and is used as a common indicator of poverty in schools. Smith expects about 78 percent of the student body to qualify.
