The Indiana Farm Bureau ELECT - the political action committee affiliated with the Indiana Farm Bureau - will not endorse either candidate for governor, according to a written statement issued Monday.
The PAC's state committee of trustees considered Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels and Democrat Jill Long Thompson, but neither received the two-thirds vote needed to gain the endorsement.
"The bar for any candidate to receive an endorsement is extremely high," said Farm Bureau President Don Villwock. "The trustees' failure to reach this threshold is simply that; it should not be interpreted in any negative manner with respect to either of the candidates."
Republican attorney general nominee Greg Zoeller and superintendent of public instruction nominee Tony Bennett on Monday supported Gov. Mitch Daniels' call for more protection for teachers who administer discipline.
The pair attended the weekly Conservative Breakfast Club meeting in Fort Wayne as part of a statewide trip to support Daniels' legislative proposal to keep teachers from being sued for disciplining students.
Zoeller reaffirmed his commitment to defend teachers against suits local school boards deem frivolous, and he promised not to settle cases.
Fort Wayne native Stephen R. Springer was elected to the Indiana University Foundation Board of Directors.
Springer is a retired senior vice president and general manager of the Williams Cos. Midstream Division, a natural gas producer and pipeline processing company.
The Indiana University Foundation is a non-profit corporation that serves IU by raising money from the private sector and by providing administrative services to donors and to the university.
The foundation also manages IU's endowment of $1.6 billion.
Springer is a member of the IU Presidents Circle, the Varsity Club, and the Kosciusko County IU Alumni Chapter. He completed a bachelor's degree and a master's of business administration at IU. He is a past member of the board of directors of the American Gas Association, the Southern Gas Association and the Gas Processor's Association.
