Indiana defensive end Ryan Marando

Marando gets the start for the suspended Greg Middleton. The senior finished second on the team with five sacks last year. He had 20 tackles, 14 solo, with one forced fumble.

Indiana wins if …

Kellen Lewis settles in

Lewis was officially named the starting quarterback Tuesday. He’s made the adjustment to IU’s no-huddle offense, but this is the first time it goes live. He’ll also have to find a new top target with James Hardy’s departure to the NFL.

Things you should know

Hello, old friend

Western Kentucky coach David Elson was a teammate of IU running backs coach Dennis Springer in college. The two played together during the 1991 season at Butler. Springer, from Fort Wayne, was the assistant head coach and defensive back coach at Western Kentucky last season.

For openers

The Hoosiers are 32-16 in home openers at Memorial Stadium. IU has won its last six home openers and 23 of 26.

Closing in

With one more touchdown pass, Lewis becomes the school’s career leader. He is tied with Antwaan Randle El with 42.
