IU’s rush defense vs. Western Kentucky’s ground game
Last year showed if the Hoosiers stop the run, they win. In their seven victories, the Hoosiers allowed an average of just 81.9 rushing yards per game. The Hilltoppers, who are entering their second season in the Football Bowl Subdivision, averaged 247.2 rushing yards per game.
Western Kentucky – None. Indiana – None.
Indiana defensive end Ryan Marando
Marando gets the start for the suspended Greg Middleton. The senior finished second on the team with five sacks last year. He had 20 tackles, 14 solo, with one forced fumble.
Kellen Lewis settles in
Lewis was officially named the starting quarterback Tuesday. He’s made the adjustment to IU’s no-huddle offense, but this is the first time it goes live. He’ll also have to find a new top target with James Hardy’s departure to the NFL.
Hello, old friend
Western Kentucky coach David Elson was a teammate of IU running backs coach Dennis Springer in college. The two played together during the 1991 season at Butler. Springer, from Fort Wayne, was the assistant head coach and defensive back coach at Western Kentucky last season.
For openers
The Hoosiers are 32-16 in home openers at Memorial Stadium. IU has won its last six home openers and 23 of 26.
Closing in
With one more touchdown pass, Lewis becomes the school’s career leader. He is tied with Antwaan Randle El with 42.
