The latest Associated Press media poll came out yesterday and while USC jumped Georgia and Ohio State to claim the No. 1 ranking, something else stood out to Insights.
Notre Dame, despite not playing a game this season and going 3-9 in 2007, still received a vote. Listen, Notre Dame could be a Top 25 team by season's end, the schedule dictates the possibility and the Irish could be vastly improved.
At this point, though, you...just...don't...know, which leads me to this: How can you really vote for Notre Dame yet?
Even the coaches and players admit that there are some answers about their team they won't know until after Saturday's opener against San Diego State. Then, when you look outside the Irish insiders, skepticism is rampant and, honestly, accurate.
So the Notre Dame voter is...Taylor Zarzour, the sports director of the Curtis Media Group in North Carolina and a talk personality on 680 WPTF in the Raleigh-Durham area.
Here's Zarzour's complete ballot -- he's got Ohio State No. 9, USC No. 1, Florida No. 2 and Georgia No. 3.
Insights e-mailed Zarzour Wednesday morning for some of his, well, insight into why he is the only poll voter to rank Notre Dame.
"The Irish bring back almost everyone on offense, bring in as good of a freshman class as there is, and have a VERY manageable schedule," Zarzour said in an e-mail. "Therefore, I could see them winning eight games. We are certainly about to find out."
