End Of First: Um....Game Is Scoreless

By Michael Rothstein
The Journal Gazette

So about that Fast Start and Diving Right In....Um, yeah. That clearly didn't happen.

Notre Dame went three-and-punt on its first possession and the Irish have not looked crisp offensively. The offensive line has blocked fairly well, but keep in mind San Diego State has no players who have really played much before on the defensive line due to injuries.

Thus far, though, this game has been fairly boring. It's scoreless after one quarter.

Ethan Johnson, Michael Floyd, Darius Fleming and Kyle Rudolph are among the Notre Dame freshmen who have played. Duval Kamara also left the game with a leg injury, but under his own power.

Of interest, San Diego State threw passes on 22 of its first 23 plays. And after one quarter, no sign of James Aldridge and little sign of Robert Hughes...but a lot of Armando Allen. And Sergio Brown and Harrison Smith are flip-flopping at one outside linebacker slot. And Notre Dame has already missed a field goal from 48 yards wide left.

A quick early second quarter note: Luke Schmidt in the game.
