Weis Gets $50,000 Per Speech

By Michael Rothstein
The Journal Gazette

Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis receives around $50,000 per speech, according to a report in the Sports Business Journal.

The dollar figure is around the top among coaches, the magazine said as part of a large package on college sports that focused on Notre Dame.

In its main story, SBJ analyzes the NBC deal and the rest of the Irish sponsorships, including a $60 million deal from adidas. The most interesting quote, though, comes from a former Notre Dame basketball player.

"This is a very important time for the football program," Scott Paddock, Gatorade's director of sports marketing and a former Irish basketball player, told the Sports Business Journal. "They've got to stay relevant with the younger demographic.…

"You can only get away with this model (of football independence) if you maintain an elite status. When ratings are down and you become less relevant, you can't justify charging a premium price."

Among the other stories in the package are about the guff Notre Dame grads in the sports industry take and a story about new athletic director Jack Swarbrick.

The Journal Gazette's Assistant Sports Editor Tony Krausz covers The University of Notre Dame. Krausz, a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a native of St. Louis, has been assistant sports editor since October 2005. Prior to joining the JG, he worked at two papers in Mississippi covering high school and college athletics.
