ND-Michigan: End Third...Weis On Crutches

By Michael Rothstein
The Journal Gazette

The rains have made this game almost unable to be seen from the press box (window washers, please?), and it's been almost as sloppy on the field.

Michigan drove inside Notre Dame's five-yard line and then Kevin Grady fumbled. The ball flip-flopped on the soaked field before Sergio Brown -- who had a pass interference call on the series -- picked it up.

It's been that kind of day for Notre Dame.

Not surprisingly, no scoring in the third quarter, but Charlie Weis is back on the sidelines, looking horribly uncomfortable on crutches. Scary moment for a second on the second-half kickoff return. Weis was standing on the 27-yard line and the action came to his side of the field barreling at him. Fortunately, the play missed him.

No official update on Weis' injury according to Notre Dame football sports information director Brian Hardin. We'll get official word after the game.

Other injuries to report: Maurice Crum left the game with a right leg injury that didn't look too good and Michigan wide receiver Greg Mathews had to be helped off the field in the final play of the third quarter.

First play of the fourth -- Michigan quarterback Steven Threet fumbles and Brian Smith picked it up and 40 yards later, scored a touchdown.

It's now 35-17 Notre Dame. This one is about over.
