GALVESTON, Texas - Texas authorities busy trying to clean up after Hurricane Ike have a new problem on their hands: There's a tiger loose.

A county official said Tuesday that the animal somehow left its enclosure at an exotic pets center in Crystal Beach. Animal experts are coming in to try and catch the tiger.

Galveston County Judge Jim Yarbrough put it this way: "Turns out there's a tiger, and I understand he's hungry ... so we're staying away from him."

Crystal Beach is on Bolivar Peninsula.

The news follows reports of a lion holed up in a Baptist church with its owner on Bolivar Peninsula as well as livestock and other animals roaming amid Hurricane Ike's wreckage.

Meanwhile Tuesday, authorities say the holdouts on Bolivar Peninsula will be required to leave in the next few days, and they are prepared to impose martial law if needed to empty the barrier island scraped clean by Hurricane Ike.

Galveston County Judge Jim Yarbrough said Tuesday there are "hardy bunch" of roughly 250 people still trying to live there, including some "old timers who aren't going to want to leave."

Officials say without food, gas, water and other necessities, the island is unlivable and everyone needs to leave so recovery can begin.

Residents will ultimately be able to return, but officials say they need to be ready for a marathon, not a race.
