Weis on Yeatman

By Michael Rothstein
The Journal Gazette

Charlie Weis found it peculiar.

Weis said the status of Notre Dame junior tight end Will Yeatman with the team has not changed since the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office decided to sentence him on a January drunk driving charge Wednesday.

The Irish head coach noted of the 37 people arrested during a raid of an off-campus party Sept. 21 only Yeatman was mentioned in the press release.

"I find it peculiar that the only guy that was mentioned out of 37 guys is one, is Will," Weis said Thursday. "I understand there are different degrees of follow up from where they are and I understand that there are three kids that are second-time offenders and not first-time offenders. I don't know all the idiosyncrasies, I don't proclaim to know them. "But I just find it ironic that there is only one person mentioned, the whole background of one person and for that, I feel bad."

Yeatman's September arrest violated the terms of his deferred sentencing agreement signed in February that stated he could not commit a crime for a year or the prior charges could be refiled. A sentencing date has not been announced, but Weis said if Yeatman is cleared, he would be available to play in a game the next day. Yeatman could be sentenced to up to 60 days in jail for the Class C OWI misdemeanor.

"He's practicing as if he's playing in a game but as I stated right from the start I'm waiting until this plays its course and that's what I'm going to do," Weis said. "Fortunately-slash-unfortunately, that's the way it is.

"If he gets cleared to go, I'll put him back out there."
