A cooler, rainy day in South Bend, yet Notre Dame went outside to practice in preparation for its road game at No. 22 North Carolina this weekend.
- Even though he had a Office of Residence Life hearing today, Will Yeatman was at practice Tuesday afternoon. That could be a good sign for the junior from San Diego.
- Also at practice, former Notre Dame All-American Chris Zorich. And Reggie Brooks.
- Not at practice: Barry Gallup Jr., Luke Schmidt.
- Offensive tackle Paul Duncan, who has had a nagging hip injury, was at practice but appeared to be sitting off to the side during individual drills.
- While the rest of the wide receivers were working on their typical Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive and Dodge drill (otherwise known as jumping over each other), senior receiver David Grimes was off to the side, holding the ball as a walk-on tried to beat it out of his hands. He was unsuccessful, but receivers usually do that if they are slowed by something. Will have to ask Grimes tomorrow about his back.
- "Ow, G. Come on, G." -- Robby Parris, yelling at George West after he bumped him to start the catch-and-cut drill Notre Dame receivers run. We think he was joking. We think.
- Michael Floyd and Golden Tate are much, much faster than any other receivers Notre Dame has -- at least in the drill they were running. Freshman Deion Walker is also up there. His speed was a notch above most of the other receivers the Irish have.
- Wide receivers coach Rob Ianello got on John Goodman, telling him to run a fade release during the drill off of the first blocker. Didn't know that's what they were all doing initially -- but it makes sense considering Notre Dame's propensity to run the fade a lot during games.
Prediction contest update: We have our first winner of the year. Chris Cohn, Notre Dame Class of 1983 from Chandler, Ariz., correctly predicted Notre Dame 28, Purdue 21. For his incredible prognostication, he'll receive a gift pack of stuff we've culled over the past couple years from around the Notre Dame beat. Want to be like Chris? Send your guesses in for this week's final score prediction contest at mrothstein@jg.net. Also send questions there for the Mailbag. We promise we'll have one this week.
For sure.
