Walker Still The Kicker

By Michael Rothstein
The Journal Gazette

Brandon Walker is still Notre Dame's starting kicker.

Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis re-opened the competition this week after Walker missed two field goals -- from 41 and 46 yards -- in Saturday's 28-21 win over Stanford.

Walker is 1 of 7 on field goals and while his kicks often have more than enough distance, he is erratic.

His lone field goal was a 41-yarder against Purdue.

Ryan Burkhart kicked Tuesday, Walker kicked Wednesday and Notre Dame football sports information director Brian Hardin relayed the message from Weis on Wednesday night that it wasn't even close.

Walker, a sophomore from Findlay, Ohio, was 6 of 12 last season.

The Journal Gazette's Assistant Sports Editor Tony Krausz covers The University of Notre Dame. Krausz, a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a native of St. Louis, has been assistant sports editor since October 2005. Prior to joining the JG, he worked at two papers in Mississippi covering high school and college athletics.
