Quick Hits From Weis' Thursday Presser

By Michael Rothstein
The Journal Gazette

Charlie Weis spoke with the media quickly after practice Thursday before getting ready to leave for Chapel Hill on Friday. Here's the highlights:

  • Weis won't be having his ACL/MCL surgery next week. He said after talking with Tom Brady, he's at least waiting until the end of the football season.
  • On the kicking situation, Weis wants one of the two guys -- either Brandon Walker or Ryan Burkhart -- to step up and be reliable. They just haven't done that.
  • Initially, Weis' plan was to have Burkhart be the kicker if the competition in practice was even close. It wasn't, so Walker remains.
  • Biggest things for Notre Dame: Not letting the first quarter get out of control and limiting turnovers.
  • Apparently, Maura Weis is also curious about the kicking situation. Weis' wife asked the same question a reporter did Thursday, about whether Walker's struggles would impact Weis' decision-making on whether to go for it or kick a field goal. Weis said if it was a managable distance (inside 40 yards), he'd let Walker kick. Otherwise, he'd really have to think about going for it.
  • Weis doesn't know if junior tight end Will Yeatman, who remains suspended, will travel with the team to North Carolina.

Krausz, a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a native of St. Louis, has been assistant sports editor since October 2005. Prior to joining the JG, he worked at two papers in Mississippi covering high school and college athletics.
