Your Mid-Morning Break: Hanks The Record Breaker

By Michael Rothstein
The Journal Gazette

Notre Dame senior forward Kerri Hanks is your new Notre Dame career goals leader for women's soccer after a 2-0 win over Connecticut on Sunday (more on that below).

It's Washington week for football, which means The Return of Ty, or, rather, the return of Notre Dame to a winless Ty.

Some links as you get started this week:

  • Ethan Johnson used swimming to recover from a knee injury, writes Eric Hansen in the South Bend Tribune.
  • Brad Lidge's high school baseball coach tells the story of how Lidge, pitching for the Phillies in the World Series, ended up at Notre Dame, writes Frank Seravalli in the Philadelphia Daily News. And more on Lidge from Ryan Lawrence of the Journal Register News Service.

  • How bad is Washington? The Seattle Times' Bob Condotta said the Huskies are looking for a warm place to hide.
  • Seattle Times columnist Steve Kelley rips Willingham for taking the redshirt off receiver Cody Bruns -- and then not really playing him much.
  • And Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune writes Willingham's time in Seattle has been tough.
  • Soccer forward Kerri Hanks became Notre Dame's all-time goals scorer with 81, and she still has a half a season left for the top-ranked Irish. She has scored in 10 straight games and is tied for eighth on the all-time NCAA points list with 225. Notre Dame beat Connecticut, 2-0, on Sunday.

The Journal Gazette's Assistant Sports Editor Tony Krausz covers The University of Notre Dame. Krausz, a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a native of St. Louis, has been assistant sports editor since October 2005. Prior to joining the JG, he worked at two papers in Mississippi covering high school and college athletics.
