A 41-year-old Fort Wayne man died of blunt-force trauma to the head Tuesday in a construction accident at a New Haven business, preliminary results from an autopsy Wednesday morning show.

Roy Randolph Kelley, 41, was an employee of Advanced Foundation Systems, 4021 Clubview Drive. He was working in a hole at a building site when he was hit in the head with a piece of construction equipment just before 11:30 a.m., officials said.

He died instantly, said officer Scott Adam, spokesman for the New Haven Police Department. The accident occurred at Don R. Fruchey Inc., 5608 Old Maumee Road, where work was being done on one of its buildings, he said.

Advanced Foundation Systems, a foundation-repair company, was  subcontracted to do work through Weigand Construction, said Larry Weigand, company president.

The crew was working on a building foundation system.

"Right now we are cooperating with the representatives from Advanced Foundation Systems and (the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration) on their investigation," Weigand said Tuesday.

Sean Keefer, a spokesman for the Indiana Department of Labor, said Tuesday that his office had been notified about the accident.

"I don’t know all the facts yet because we are still reviewing them," he said.

Keefer said there is an ongoing investigation into the accident that will include interviewing employees and witnesses. Later, investigators will determine whether any fines or citations should be issued to the companies or contractors involved, he said.

That could take weeks or months.
