Your Mid-Morning Break: When You've Stulled Out

By Michael Rothstein
The Journal Gazette

The Tyrone Willingham storyline is finally over so now everyone can move on -- Washington to a new coach at season's end and Notre Dame to November, which starts against Pitt and ends at USC.

As October hangs around for a few more days, here are some links for you to start that last week of the month with:

  • Pittsburgh quarterback Bill Stull was taken to the hospital after Saturday's loss to Rutgers, but his father is now saying he's "absolutely fine," writes Kevin Gorman of the Tribune-Review. It's still unknown whether or not Stull will play this week.
  • Skylar Diggins, one of the best high school girls' basketball players in the country and a South Bend native, is still deciding where to play basketball, including Notre Dame.
  • When the New York City marathon takes place Saturday, watch for a special group. They'll be a bunch of former Notre Dame runners, dressed in blue and gold, running in the memory of Ryan Shay, who died a year ago Nov. 3, writes Liz Robbins in the New York Times. Shay collapsed during last year's Olympic trials in New York, the day before the New York City marathon.
  • Fort Wayne's Kerry Ingilis, a little-used forward for the Irish women's soccer team, scored two goals in the regular season finale against Seton Hall. The top-ranked Notre Dame women's soccer team is the first in program history to finish the regular season undefeated.
  • Digger Phelps went to Philadelphia to watch his son-in-law, Jamie Moyer, pitch in the World Series.
  • Former Notre Dame player Lee Becton is now playing semi-pro football in Indiana.
  • More women's soccer: This time a feature on Carrie Dew and Kelsey Lysander.

The Journal Gazette's Assistant Sports Editor Tony Krausz covers The University of Notre Dame. Krausz, a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a native of St. Louis, has been assistant sports editor since October 2005. Prior to joining the JG, he worked at two papers in Mississippi covering high school and college athletics.
