Practice Observations: 10/29/08

By Michael Rothstein
The Journal Gazette

Notre Dame practiced outside on a frigid, windy day:

  • Everyone was around at practice today -- at least from what we saw. Well, except for the injured (Luke Schmidt, Mike Ragone and Paul Duncan) and the suspended (Will Yeatman).
  • When David Bruton and David Grimes met at midfield for stretching, they first did a jumping body bump.

  • Not sure if I've mentioned this before, but freshman quarterback Dayne Crist has what appears to be a thin black brace on his left leg.
  • Ron Powlus, like many of the coaches, was in full sweats and gloves. He looked like someone who was ready for a snowball fight if there was, you know, snow on the ground.
  • Michael Haywood's observation of the day: "Sleeves are slippery." He's talking about for running backs, who would have a greater chance of losing the ball on handoffs if they wore sleeves.
  • Chris Stewart was the only lineman in sweats today.
  • Raeshon McNeil was the lone defensive back in sweats.

  • When Michael Floyd finished one of the drills, something rare happened -- at least during the media session -- the other receivers started jawing at him playfully.

  • Robby Parris after going through a hit-by-bag drill: "I got whiplash on that last one."
  • Also of note, no sleeves for Southern California native Jimmy Clausen. Perhaps he's getting used to the cold.

  • How hard can it be for some guys to catch the ball in the cold. Take this little response from Golden Tate. He caught the ball then immediately tossed it to a student manager, all the while shaking his hands saying "Aaarggghhh," clearly in a bit of stinging pain. He was wearing gloves, too.
