ND-Pitt End First: Not Much Offense

By Michael Rothstein
The Journal Gazette

Notre Dame has done a good job on Pitt running back LeSean McCoy.

How good? Pitt had two yards rushing as a team in the first quarter.

Neither team mustered much offense, as Pitt and Notre Dame are tied at 3-3 after 15 minutes.

Biggest momentum play of the quarter was Pittsburgh's seventh blocked kick of the season, this time a punt which led to the Panthers' field goal.

The Irish had a balanced attack in the first quarter with 75 yards passing and 53 yards rushing.

Oh, and former wide receiver and current Chicago Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija arrived a few minutes before game time. He and Jon Bon Jovi have been hanging out together on the sidelines around the 25-yard line on the Irish side of the field.

Early second quarter note: David Grimes made his first appearance in the game as Jimmy Clausen tried to hit him over the middle for a first down but the play was broken up.
