The Notre Dame women’s soccer team was named the No. 1-overall seed for this year’s NCAA tournament.
“It was reassuring to see it up there on the TV,” senior defender Carrie Dew said by phone after the selection show Monday. “And see it was real.”
No. 1 Notre Dame (21-0-0) will face Toledo (16-4-1), the champions of the Mid-American Conference, in the first round Friday. It will be the first of four potential home games for the Irish until the College Cup on Dec. 5-7. As long as Notre Dame continues to win, it will play at home until the Final Four.
“It’s good to know that you don’t have to (go on the road),” Notre Dame head coach Randy Waldrum said. “That’s the important part.”
Negotiations to get the Indy 300 race on Australia’s Gold Coast back onto the Indy Racing League calendar broke down after local backers and series organizers failed to agree on the timing of the event. The Indy 300 had been held at Surfers Paradise every October since 1991.
Two people familiar with a proposed deal said Oakland and Colorado have reached a tentative agreement that would send star outfield Matt Holliday to the Athletics. Both people spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been finalized and details were still in the works. … Preacher Roe, a four-time All-Star pitcher who played for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Pittsburgh and St. Louis, died. Roe died Sunday in West Plains, Mo., said the funeral home handling the arrangements. His own Web site listed his age as 92 – other reference materials differed by a year or two.
The Mad Ants will play the Erie Bayhawks in an NBA D-League preseason game Nov. 21, beginning at 7 p.m. at Grace College. It is the first preseason game that the Mad Ants have played host to and the first time they have ventured outside of Fort Wayne for a game.
