BLOOMINGTON – Malik Story scored 15 points, and Indiana defeated Bemidji State 72-54 to finish its exhibition season unbeaten.
Tom Pritchard and Nick Williams each scored 12 points for the Hoosiers on Tuesday night.
Brady Faribanks scored 14 points and Seth Haake added 12 for Bemidji State.
Indiana held Bemidji State to 33 percent shooting and outrebounded the Beavers 47-33.
Indiana led 37-26 at halftime, but Bemidji State cut the Hoosiers’ lead to 42-38 with 14:27 to play. Indiana responded with a 9-3 run, including two baskets by Story, to bump the lead to 51-41 and put the Hoosiers in control for good. Indiana’s largest lead was 21 points with 1:35 to play.
Sophomore Kipp Schutz, a member of the IU baseball team, has been added to the roster of the basketball team. Schutz, a 6-foot-4 guard from Evansville, averaged 11 points as a high school senior at Harrison. Schutz was expected to see action in Tuesday’s exhibition game against Bemidji State. In another note, forward Kyle Taber was ready to play Tuesday. He’s recovered from a knee injury during the summer.
Kyle Singler scored 19 points for the second straight game and No. 8 Duke (2-0) rolled into the 2K Sports Classic semifinals by routing Georgia Southern 97-54 at Durham, N.C.
Chicago guard Kirk Hinrich had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb and could be out for three months. Hinrich was hurt last Friday night in Chicago’s 100-83 victory over Phoenix.
Detroit guard Rodney Stuckey will rejoin the team today after missing the first game of a West Coast road trip to undergo tests for being lightheaded and dizzy. After undergoing tests Tuesday, Stuckey was cleared to return and was scheduled to fly to the Bay Area today
The Big East will promote senior associate commissioner John Marinatto to replace Mike Tranghese, who is retiring after 19 years leading the conference. A person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press that Marinatto would be introduced today as the Big East’s third commissioner. The person requested anonymity because the official announcement had yet to be made.
Minnesota wide receiver Eric Decker will not play Saturday against Wisconsin because of an ankle injury. Decker is one of the 10 finalists for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the nation’s top receiver. He leads the Big Ten with 74 catches but got hurt Nov. 1 against Northwestern.
A former minor league football player was evaluated by mental health professionals after police in Pasco, Wash., said he forced his way into a secured area at an airport and bit off the fingertip of an officer during a jail scuffle. Michael Rayfield Hodges, 25, who played for the Tri-Cities Fever of arenafootball2, was being held in the Franklin County jail, where he met with a state psychologist.
Nick Price shot a 7-under 65 to lead the Champions Tour team to two nine-hole tournament victories at the 17th annual Wendy’s 3-Tour Challenge in Henderson, Nev. Price shot a 5-under 31 to top the field of nine golfers and lead the Champions team to victory over the first nine holes at Rio Secco Golf Club. He also led the team with a 2-under 34 for the second nine.
A 22-year-old college dropout from Denmark won the World Series of Poker and its $9.15 million prize in Las Vegas. Peter Eastgate became the tournament’s youngest champion, making a wheel straight and eliminating 27-year-old semiprofessional card player Ivan Demidov.
Landon Donovan has been voted the top U.S. soccer player of 2008, becoming the only five-time winner of the Honda Player of the Year award. Donovan led Major League Soccer in scoring this year with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Novak Djokovic rallied past Nikolay Davydenko 7-6 (3), 0-6, 7-5 Tuesday to reach the semifinals of the season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai, China. In the day’s other round-robin match, Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5).
