Luke Zeller spent an hour on the phone with his younger brother, Tyler, last night after North Carolina's 77-58 win over Kentucky.
He spent half the time going through what happened when Tyler, a freshman forward at North Carolina, broke two bones in his left wrist. The other half was catching up as normal. Luke said Tyler was having surgery Wednesday afternoon.
The biggest bummer for the Zellers -- besides Tyler's lost season -- is that the two wouldn't get to play one another if Notre Dame and North Carolina met in the Maui Invitational next week.
"Won't go to LA, hopefully he'll be able to go to Maui," Luke Zeller said of his brother. "Just kind of depends how he feels and everything else. Talked to him forever last night and he was like I'll be at all your games cheering for you. I don't care. I'll be there.
"I don't know if he was on some painkillers last night or what was going on but we sat there last night."
Luke said doctors were inserting plates and screws into the sides of the left wrist and about the only good thing to come out of it was that it happened to Tyler's left, non-shooting, hand.
That and it may give Luke a chance at an easy gift during the holidays.
"If he's out for the year, I guess I'll have to send him a new suit or something for Christmas," Luke Zeller said.
