If it looked like Fort Wayne Komets forward Konstantin Shafranov had slowed down in recent weeks, there was a reason.
According to general manager David Franke, Shafranov has a sports hernia, an injury that he'll likely have surgery to repair next week.
"He hasn't been moving as good lately as he was earlier in the season," Franke said. "We knew something was wrong when we watched him taking his first few strides and having problems. It's good that we know about it this early in the season."
Shafranov will be out about a month.
"He's had a problem the last three weeks or so and it's been nagging him," coach Al Sims said, "We'll get it taken care of and hopefully he'll be 100 percent when he comes back. ... It's something every team goes through. Their best players get hurt sometimes and we've got to find a way to persevere without him."
Shafranov has six goals and 15 points in 11 games, after tallying three goals and 11 points in the first six games of the season.
The Komets (7-4-0) play host to the Port Huron Icehawks (7-6-0) on Friday night.
