A year ago, wide receiver D.J. Hord was part of a Notre Dame that struggled to its worst season in school history.
A year and a transfer later, Hord is enjoying more success than any of his former Irish teammates. A day after Notre Dame was upset by Syracuse, 24-23, Hord and his new team, FCS school Northern Iowa, were awarded the No. 3 seed in the 2008 FCS football tournament on Sunday.
Hord and his new team will play CAA school Maine in the first round at 5:05 p.m. Saturday, meaning it should finish just as the bloodbath, er, Notre Dame-USC game should be getting underway.
The junior has played in all 12 games for Northern Iowa, making eight catches for 77 yards. That's more than Hord made in two years at Notre Dame (three if you count his wrecked sophomore year because of injury), when he caught two passes for seven yards.
James Madison, the top seed in the FCS tournament (and a school Insights used to cover in a former life in Harrisonburg, Va.), is No. 33 in the Sagarin ratings. No. 2 Appalachian State is No. 49, unseeded Richmond is No. 55 and unseeded Villanova is No. 57.
The point, you ask?
Notre Dame is currently No. 59.
