Sounds Like ND Would Go To A Bowl Game

By Michael Rothstein
The Journal Gazette

Who likes El Paso? Anyone? Anyone?

OK, just checking and doing a little head count.

Charlie Weis said Sunday that not going to a bowl -- and therefore missing out on more practices with a team -- could be detrimental to a program.

"No one's jumping up and down to go to a bowl, if you were to lose the game and end up 6-6, no one is jumping up and down to do that," Weis said. "But at the same time, that's multiple practices and development that could be going on that you end up losing out on. And I think in your program's sake, I think it ends up hurting you in the long run."

With Notre Dame's loss Saturday, the Cotton Bowl is effectively out of the picture. Barring an unlikely win in Los Angeles, the Gator Bowl would be an unexpected spot for a 6-6 Irish team.

So that leaves, at least for now, the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas. ESPN has the Irish there playing either Oregon or California. And for those who are REALLY enterprising, Insights has found flights to El Paso for the great price of $304.50. And a quick search on CitySearch tells Insights that Romeo's Nite Club is "the best night club you find in West Texas."

Then again, that was in 2004.

Prior to joining the JG, he worked at two papers in Mississippi covering high school and college athletics.
