A bleak forecast for Black Friday didn’t keep hundreds of people from waiting more than an hour to buy a $20 book.
But as a bonus, the people waiting got to meet its author, Glenn Beck, who stopped by Fort Wayne to sign copies of his first novel, “The Christmas Sweater.”
By 11 a.m., nearly 250 people were in line to briefly meet Beck at Mitchell Books on West Jefferson Boulevard. When Beck left 45 minutes later, more than 400 copies of the nearly 300-page book had sold.
Diana Reed, a teaching assistant from Huntington, was the first one in line, having waited since 8:30 a.m. for Beck. She said that because she didn’t have to work Friday she didn’t have much better to do than try to get his autograph.
The conservative commentator hosts a weekday radio show, which airs in Fort Wayne on WOWO-AM 1190. He will host a new show on Fox News Channel next year.
Mike Fuhrman, 50, of Monroeville, said he is a regular listener to the show because Beck strikes a chord with him on issues of morality.
“He just puts forth a lot of things I believe in,” Fuhrman said.
After signing autographs, Beck addressed the crowd for a few minutes. Wearing a black jacket over a blue Toronto Maple Leafs hooded sweat shirt, Beck became emotional when talking to the crowd.
He said he wants to provide a message of hope but knows dangerous times are ahead. He said the country is divided and could literally split if people don’t stop thinking of political opponents as caricatures.
Instead, people must understand the country is special and blessed by God, Beck said.
