Republican party members will not have to reconvene for another caucus soon.
Allen County Councilwoman Paula Hughes, R-2nd, announced during Saturdays three-part caucus that she would remain on the council and would continue to live and work here.
Hughes was being considered for the No. 2 spot with the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance, work that would have kept her in Indianapolis much of the time. Had she stepped down from the council, another caucus would have filled her seat.
Hughes said she was offered the job but after much deliberation decided it wasnt the right move for her or her family.
Ill call this the Beale factor, she said of her 5-year-old son. Commuting between Fort Wayne and the state capital would have kept her from spending much time with her son, Hughes said.
Her husbands work and his aging parents would have prevented the family from relocating together, she said.
Hughes revealed this month that she was being considered for the post – a position that Gov. Mitch Daniels would have the final say on who got the job.
Hughes said she was honored to be considered for the job and thought the experience might give her a leg up if she decides to run for Fort Wayne mayor.
It was really hard to not be a part of that, she said of the state job. I have decided to stay in Fort Wayne. This is where my heart is.
