DELPHI, Ind. – A man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after his conviction for setting a fire that heavily damaged a full-sized replica of a 19th century canal boat in a Delphi park.

A Carroll County judge on Friday ruled that 62-year-old Larry Farner was a habitual offender, a conviction that accounted for half the 20-year sentence. A jury in December found Farner guilty of arson in the Aug. 31 fire.

The fire at an interpretative center about the Wabash & Erie Canal damaged about half the 72-foot boat, which volunteers spent hundreds of hours building.

Farner’s attorney said in court that Farner denies any involvement with the fire.

Volunteers have since rebuilt the boat in the park about 20 miles northeast of Lafayette.
