Family: I have been married to my husband, Brian, for almost 20 years. We have a son, Corbin, who is 12 and very involved in sports. Our daughter, Morgan, who is 9, is very involved in dance and gymnastics. We also have two retired racing greyhounds, an Italian greyhound and a cat.

Last book read: “Twilight” for me and “Boxcar Children” to my class.

Favorite teacher: Mrs. Cathy Hausfeld, my kindergarten teacher with whom I taught kindergarten during my first year of teaching.

Favorite class in school: Math. Thanks, Mr. Romary, for showing me I really could do algebra.

Favorite teaching memory: I have had the privilege of teaching many students but have taught kindergarten at Southwick Elementary, Meadowbrook Elementary, and New Haven Elementary and then taught fourth grade at those schools when the my kindergarten students were fourth-graders. What a delight to see the “grown-up” students that I had as kindergarteners enter my classroom for yet another year in my class. This makes for great relationships with students as well as parents.

What is your favorite classroom unit to teach and why: I love to teach long division. This is a difficult math standard for students to master, and it is a great sense of accomplishment to see them understand the process. I use a mental model picture that the students can tape on their desk while learning it that helps them to remember all of the steps in the process.

Nominated by: Melissa Doreff, parent

Reason for nomination: She is more than a teacher. She is a second mom to my daughter. My child has (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) along with (obsessive compulsive disorder) and Mrs. Yoh is in constant contact with me. She e-mails me and calls me with ideas, daily updates and how to better help my daughter manage her responsibilities.
