Jeep hits cruiser before fatal crash with tree

Before a fiery fatal crash in DeKalb County on Monday morning, a Jeep went through a closed garage door and struck a deputy’s police car, Indiana State Police said.

According to a statement from state police at Fort Wayne, a DeKalb County sheriff’s deputy talked to someone through the window of a residence in the 5300 block of County Road 51. Then, it said, an occupant went into the garage, drove the Jeep through the closed door and struck the cruiser before going south on County Road 51.

The statement said a second deputy tried to catch up to the Jeep when it left the road about a mile south of the residence, between County Roads 56 and 60, struck a tree head-on and caught fire.

The driver, who was alone in the Jeep, died at the scene.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday. The name of the driver has not been released.
