Winter storm warning: 5-9 inches by Wednesday night

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for parts of northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio, including Allen County, from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, saying 5 to 9 inches of snow are possible in the area by Wednesday night.

The warning is for Allen, Adams, Huntington and Wells counties in Indiana and for Paulding and Van Wert counties in Ohio.

The weather service said snow will spread over the area from the south beginning early Wednesday, and become moderate to heavy at times by midday.

The heaviest snowfalls are expected south of a line from Hartford City, Ind., to Ottawa, Ohio, the weather service said.

It said winds would increase to 25 mph by early Wednesday, with gusts of 30 to 35 mph by Wednesday evening, creating blowing and drifting snow and reducing visibility at times.

For DeKalb County, Ind., and for Defiance and Williams counties, Ohio, the winter storm warning is in effect from 7 a.m. Wednesday to 1 a.m. Thursday, the weather service said.

It said 4 to 7 inches of snow are expected by late Wednesday night, with locally higher amounts possible. The heaviest snow is expected during the day Wednesday.

For Mercer County, Ohio, a winter storm warning is in effect from 1 a.m. Wednesday to 1 a.m. Thursday, the weather service said. It said accumulation of 4 to 8 inches is possible.

A six-county area of northeast Indiana -- Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, Wabash and Whitley -- is under a winter weather advisory for 2 to 4 inches of snow by Wednesday night.
