Verbatim: Helmke statement on Brady's death

Former three-term Fort Wayne Mayor Paul Helmke, who was director of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence from 2006 to 2011, released the following statement on Brady's death:

"Jim Brady was an inspiration to me and almost all who met him or had the chance to hear him. His injuries at the hands of a would-be assassin showed the ubiquity of gun violence in our country. His positive outlook on life in the face of daily pain for over 33 years as a result of his injuries showed the strength of the human spirit. His efforts to strengthen our laws to make it harder for dangerous people to buy guns showed how individual efforts can make a difference in our political system.

"I felt honored to work with Jim and Sarah Brady when I was a mayor and even more so when they asked me to head the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. Jim's pain has ended but his legacy, and his challenge to do more to make our country safer, live on."
