GREENVILLE, N.C. – Freshman Ryan Williams ran for a season-high 179 yards and No. 22 Virginia Tech avoided its first three-game losing streak in six years, holding off East Carolina 16-3 Thursday night.

Tyrod Taylor had a 13-yard touchdown run, Matt Waldron kicked three field goals and Williams atoned for his critical miscue last week against North Carolina by cracking the 1,000-yard mark for the Hokies (6-3).

“That fumble did something to me, mentally, last week,” Williams said. “I think the only person that was going to be able to overcome what happened last week was myself. … I realized that it happens to everybody, nobody can be perfect.”

They held a 379-277 advantage in total yardage over East Carolina (5-4), forced three turnovers and made just enough plays to bounce back from losses to No. 10 Georgia Tech and the Tar Heels. They also avenged last year’s loss to the Pirates.

MAC

TEMPLE 34, MIAMI (OHIO) 32: Bernard Pierce ran for 172 yards and three touchdowns, and Brandon McManus kicked an 18-yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining to propel the Owls in Phialdelphia.

The Owls (7-2, 5-0) won their seventh consecutive game but blew leads of 21-3 and 31-13 against the RedHawks (1-9, 1-5).

NORTHERN ILLINOIS 50, EASTERN MICHIGAN 6: Tommy Davis returned the opening kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown, and Chad Spann ran for a career-high 174 yards and two scores to spark the Huskies’ rout in DeKalb, Ill.

The Huskies (6-3, 4-1) won their third consecutive game, scoring on five straight possessions to take a 37-6 halftime lead. Northern Illinois piled up 537 yards in total offense.

Eastern Michigan (0-9, 0-5) twice drove inside the Northern Illinois 5 in the first quarter but reached Huskies territory just once the rest of the way.
