Freshman Bawa Muniru has been cleared to play for Indiana by the NCAA Clearinghouse, the school confirmed Thursday.

Muniru has practiced with the team since arriving, awaiting word on his eligibility. The 6-foot-11 center did not play in Wednesday’s exhibition game against Grace.

“We are excited for Bawa as he can now move forward with his energies completely focused on his academic and athletic career at Indiana,” IU coach Tom Crean said in a statement. “We know the NCAA had to take their time and we appreciate them seeing this process through. At Indiana, we have so many outstanding individuals in our compliance, eligibility and academic support areas who worked so hard and diligently on his behalf.”

Muniru was rated No. 111 in the class of 2009 by Rivals.com. He was ranked the 14th-best center. He averaged 16.6 points and 8.9 rebounds as a senior at Madison (Ala.) Academy.
