Avs top Blackhawks in 8-round shootout

DENVER – Chris Stewart scored in the eighth round of the shootout, helping the NHL-leading Colorado Avalanche remain unbeaten at home with a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night.

Dustin Byfuglien had a chance to tie but sent his slap shot just wide.

Ryan O’Reilly scored twice for Colorado in regulation, while David Jones added a short-handed goal.

The Avalanche moved to 6-0 at Pepsi Center this season, matching the franchise record for consecutive home wins to start a season.

Byfuglien, Duncan Keith and Andrew Ladd scored for the Blackhawks, who lost for the second straight night.

Craig Anderson returned to the net after receiving a rare night off. The Avalanche goalie stopped 29 shots, including a vital save in overtime when he turned back Patrick Sharp’s shot.

DEVILS 2, ISLANDERS 1: Yann Danis made 23 saves and stopped four in-close attempts in the third period against his former teammates to lead host New Jersey past New York.

Brian Rolston scored the winner on a power play and defenseman Cory Murphy added his first goal as a Devil.

Frans Nielsen scored for New York, and Martin Biron made 29 saves.

CAPITALS 4, PANTHERS 1: Jose Theodore stopped 28 shots, and Brian Pothier had a goal and two assists as visiting Washington – playing without injured star Alex Ovechkin for the second straight game – beat Florida to end a three-game losing streak.

Brendan Morrison scored twice and Tyler Sloan added a goal for the Capitals.

FLYERS 5, SABRES 2: Daniel Carcillo scored twice and Ray Emery made 28 saves to lead visiting Philadelphia to its fifth straight victory over Buffalo.

Chris Pronger had a goal and assist, and James van Riemsdyk and Darroll Powe also scored. The Flyers (8-4-1) have won three straight by a combined score of 17-5.

MAPLE LEAFS 3, HURRICANES 2: Jason Blake scored on a power play with 8:24 left, and Jonas Gustavsson made 34 saves as visiting Toronto earned its second win in 14 games.

John Mitchell and Nikolai Kulemin also scored for Toronto. The Maple Leafs (2-7-5) have earned points in their last six games.

Brandon Sutter and Sergei Samsonov scored for Carolina. Last in the NHL at 2-10-3, the Hurricanes are winless in their last 11 games.

STARS 2, CANUCKS 1: Brad Richards scored midway through the second period, and Brenden Morrow added a third-period power-play goal as host Dallas held off Vancouver despite a 45-save performance by Canucks rookie Cory Schneider.

Marty Turco stopped 32 shots to help Dallas snap the Canucks’ winning streak at three games. Mason Raymond scored for Vancouver, making the second stop on a five-game trip.
