Nick Boucher was supposed to start in net for the Komets on Friday night, but a thumb injury suffered last weekend was bothering him.
“He could have played, but we didn’t want to chance it with there being only one game this weekend,” coach Al Sims said.
“And we’ve got confidence in Timmy Haun.”
Haun showed why, helping the Komets to a 4-3 victory over the Flint Generals in an overtime shootout at Perani Arena. He stopped 26 of 29 shots in regulation, then all three opponents he faced in the shootout.
Komets left wing Konstantin Shafranov beat Rob Nolan for the game-winning tally.
Shafranov and defenseman Frankie DeAngelis opened the scoring in the first period, but the Komets gave up goals to Nathan Ward, Tony Tuzzolino and Steve Silver in a lopsided second period.
“Flint really took it to us, and we stood around and watched them in the second period,” Sims said. “It could have been 6-2, if it wasn’t for Haun.”
P.C. Drouin forced OT when he scored off a faceoff 13:35 into the third period.
The Komets (5-2-0) are off until next Friday, when they play host to Quad City. Flint dropped to 2-5-1.
