Trine moves to 8-1, clinches conference crown

Trine won its sixth straight game in comeback fashion in a 21-16 decision over Adrian College at home Saturday.

The Thunder (8-1) trailed 16-14 at halftime before Eric Watt’s 24-yard run in the third quarter provided the winning margin against Adrian (5-3, 3-2).

Trine wrapped up its second straight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title and another trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs in two weeks with the win.

The Thunder is now 7-0 in the conference.

Watt also passed for 127 yards and a touchdown to Paul Curtis. Mario Brown gave the Thunder a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 3-yard scoring run.

The game was billed as a white-out game with fans encouraged to wear white in support of the Thunder.

FRANKLIN 28, MANCHESTER 21: The host Grizzlies scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to rally past the Spartans.

Manchester (4-5, 4-2 HCAC) held a 21-7 lead in the third quarter on Justin Minnich’s third touchdown pass of the game, three yards to Josh DePew.

Minnich threw for 100 yards and was picked off twice.

TAYLOR 45, OLIVET 35: Shaun Addison threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns for the visiting Trojans.

Trevor Terrell, Trenton Schmale and Matt Orvis all caught scoring strikes from Addison for Taylor (6-3, 4-2).

MISSOURI STATE 31, INDIANA STATE 7: Cody Kirby threw for a touchdown and ran for another to lead Missouri State, which scored twice early in the second half, including on its opening drive, to add to its 10-0 halftime lead over the Sycamores (1-9, 1-6).

Indiana State scored a touchdown with 5:27 left in the game on a 1-yard run by Chris Stutzriem.

JACKSONVILLE 49, VALPARAISO 20: Josh McGregor threw three touchdown passes to lead the host Dolphins.

Nate Goergen led the Crusaders (1-8) with 261 passing yards and two touchdowns.

McGregor went 16 for 24 for 305 yards. He threw touchdown passes of 12 yards to Josh Philpart, 11 yards to Chris Kuck and 11 yards to Rodney Sumter. McGregor spread the ball to 10 different receivers.

The Dolphins piled up 581 yards of total offense.

BUTLER 31, DAYTON 28: Andrew Huck ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more in the Bulldogs’ road win.

Butler, which snapped a seven-game losing streak against the Flyers, improved to 9-0.

The Bulldogs took a 31-20 lead on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Huck to Carter Walley with 3:27 remaining. The drive began after Butler’s Mark Giacomantonio returned an interception 19 yards to the Flyers’ 23-yard line.

AKRON 28, KENT STATE 20: Patrick Nicely threw two touchdown passes to Jeremy LaFrance to lead the host Zips.

LaFrance caught a 59-yard pass from Nicely to give the Zips a 14-3 lead early in the second quarter. Akron won for the ninth time in 10 meetings with the Golden Flashes.

Nicely and LaFrance connected again for a 6-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to give Akron a 28-13 lead, en route to snapping a three-game winning streak for Kent State.

Nicely was 19 of 34 with 261 yards and LaFrance finished with eight catches for 261 yards.

Andre Jones added 93 yards on six carries for the Zips.

Spencer Keith led the Golden Flashes with 377 yards and two touchdowns on 30-for-59 passing.
